The auroral boundary index of Gussenhoven et al. (1982) is used to show both the dependence of the size of the auroral oval on the dayside reconnection, and the dependence of the dayside reconnection rate on the IMF By component and the dipole tilt angle. For a positive (negative) dipole tilt angle of the earth, the size of the auroral oval during periods of positive By is found to be smaller (greater) than that during periods of negative By. This relation is noted in both the Northern and Southern hemispheres.
