In situ experiments using a gasketed diamond-anvil cell coupled with laser heating have demonstrated crystallization of the nonquenchable phases of diopside, omphacite, and diopside-II in the cubic perovskite structure at pressures greater than about 230 mbar and at temperature of about 1000 C. The lattice parameter for the perovskite phase of Ca(0.5)Mg(0.5)-SiO3 is shown to be a = 3.437 + or - 0.004 A in the 230-245 mbar pressure range at room temperature. Results suggest that Diopside-II may be the host of both Ca and Na in the lower mantle.
