We discuss the impact of space-borne laser interferometric experiments operating in the low-frequency window (~1 μHz-1 Hz), with the goal of identifying the fundamental issues that regard the detection of a primordial background of GW predicted by slow-roll inflationary models, corresponding to h1002Ω~10-16-10-15. We analyze the capabilities of the planned single-instrument LISA mission and the sensitivity improvements that could be achieved by cross-correlating the data streams from a pair of detectors of the LISA-class. We estimate that the primordial background can be detected only if its fractional energy density h1002Ω is greater than a few times 10-12. We briefly discuss a possible follow-on mission with optimal sensitivity in the 0.1 Hz band specifically aimed at gravitational wave cosmology. .
