Observational studies of airglow and aurora from the ground under fully sunlit conditions in the visible spectral range remain possibly one of the last frontiers in optical aeronomy. In the 30 years since the last comprehensive reviews of twilight airglow and dayglow by Hunten and Noxon, respectively, technology has undergone revolutionary change. Additionally, space experiments have provided key information on the excitation processes for important airglow emissions. This paper reviews the progress on both these fronts and speculates on the future.
