Three different explanations for the period gap of cataclysmic variables, the static case, strong magnetic braking, and disrupted magnetic braking, are investigated and compared with observations. The static picture is ruled out and strong continued magnetic braking is shown to be unlikely, while disrupted magnetic braking is shown to provide a good explanation. A simple derivation is given for the magnetic braking of a star as a function of the magnetic-field strength and the wind mass flux. A field strength of about 100 gauss or more and a wind of 10 to the -10th solar masses/yr are needed for the secondary of a cataclysmic variable to explain the braking.
