Data gathered by a chain of ground-based stations in 1978 are used to compare Pi 2 geomagnetic current pulsations at longitudes outside the current wedge and displaying characteristics of field-aligned currents. Eastward phase propagation is normally absent inside the wedge but frequent outside. The longitudinal pattern of the horizontal polarization ellipse azimuth extended beyond the meridians of the field-aligned currents and clockwise polarization occurred in proportion to distance from the field-aligned current meridians. Westward propagation was dominant west of the meridians while eastward propagation was most prominent east of the current system. The eastward propagation is shown to fit a previous model for longitudinal variation in polarization azimuth.
