We propose to continue our program to observe novae, recurrent novae and X-ray novae when outburst events occur. By obtaining spectra at visual maximum, periodically during the post maximum decay, and, if possible, during the pre-maximum rise, we will follow the evolution of the continuum and the line spectra. For both novae and X-ray novae low dispersion spectra will enable us to derive the interstellar absorption (from the middle UV graphite absorption feature and from ratios of line strengths) from which the distance can be estimated. The time sequence of dereddened spectra will yield information on the evolution of effective temperature, luminosity, physical conditions in the source, and abundances of elements. This time sequence will also permit dust formation in the expanding envelope to be studied. High dispersion spectra, if feasible, will be obtained for line identification and to derive the mass and expansion rate of the nova ejecta. These data will be integrated with existing data for five novae and three X-ray novae to explore their differences and similarities and to distinguish between models of the outburst mechanism. We also propose to continue obtaining post-outburst spectra of GK Per for comparison with the spectra in outburst and to investigate the possible evolution of the accretion disk between outbursts. Since all three proposers reside near Goddard Space Flight Center, we will be able to respond rapidly to obtain observations during the critical early phases of the outburst.
