We propose to obtain spectra of any newly discovered comets as a function of heliocentric distance. High resolution studies should yield information regarding the D/H ratio, the importance of collisions in the inner coma, and the details of the continuum reflectivity of the solid particles. Low resolution spectra will enable us to investigate the relationship between the production of carbon-containing species and the production of H2O, the spatial distribution of ions, and the differences between dusty and gassy comets.
