Chi-1 Ori (GO V) and 59 Vir (G0 V) are among the youngest solartype stars in the nearby field. Their Li ages are estimated to be 0.6 Gyr and 0.1 Gyr, respectively. Both stars were observed with IUE in low resolution by Simon and Boesgaard (1983) in a study of the relation between ultraviolet chromospheric activity and age. These young stars have strong chromospheric and transition region lines, and are among the few solar-type stars observable with high dispersion in the short wavelength (1200 - 2000A) camera of IUE. In this proposal we are requesting time for a program of high dispersion spectroscopy to secure double-shift exposures (up to 16 hours) of each star with the SWP camera. We propose to do this by scheduling contiguous NASA - ESA 8 hour shifts. These observations will allow us to resolve the profiles of individual chromospheric and transition region emission lines, from which we will derive temperature, density, and velocity-field models. NLTE radiative transfer calculations will be used to study lines formed in the low chromsphere, T < 20000 K; an emission measure analysis of the UV lines formed above this height and Einstein Observatory X ray fluxes will be used to model the higher temperature regions extending into the coronae of these two stars. With the derived models. we will investigate the energy balance and non-thermal energy requirements of these atmospheres, in addition to the evolution of chromospheric, transition region, and coronal Structure among stars much younger than the Sun.
