Results are reported of high-resolution IUE observations of Vela X-1 between Feb. 16 and 22, 1984. The UV spectra were obtained exactly simultaneously with EXOSAT observations of the source. Some preliminary X-ray data are presented. The ionization structure of the stellar wind, as diagnosticized by the shape of the Si IV resonance line profiles near binary phase 0.5 shows a clear difference with respect to previous observations. Several possibilities to explain this difference are briefly discussed.
