The Herbig Ae variable AB Aur (spectral type AO) MgII resonance lines (2796,2802 A) and CIV resonance line at 1548 A were studied. Results show the presence of a deep and extended chromosphere in the wind of AB Aur, where the temperature reaches 18,000 K. Constraints on the structure of the wind are derived. The mass loss rate is found to lie between 4 times 10 to the minus 11 and minus 7 billion M/yr. A pure thermal Doppler broadening is not sufficient to explain the profile of the MgII and CIV lines.
