X-shooter, the new three-arm spectrograph at the VLT promises to be a
powerful tool for high quality observations of targets of intermediate
and faint magnitude at any redshift. The instrument capabilities are
summarised and several examples of its use for the spectroscopy of
intermediate and high redshift objects presented.
