We present the first steps in our development of a science data simulation package for the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). In its current form, this package models the optics of the JWST Optical Telescope Element and instrumental noise sources in conjunction with stellar spectral energy distributions and galaxy evolution models to produce realistic astronomical images. The goal of these simulations is to provide the astronomical community with simulated data in a variety of disciplines (e.g., deep fields of galaxies, globular clusters, exoplanet characterization) and a variety of observing modes (direct imaging, multi-object spectroscopy, coronagraphy) to help identify the unique science capabilities of JWST and anticipate future opportunities. These simulated data will also be used to test data pipelines and the robustness of wavefront sensing and control schemes in the presence of residual detector noise and instrumental signatures.
