The instrument uses a CO2 laser and electric filters to provide a resolution up to 10 to the minus 7th power, and higher sensitivity. The apparatus contains a frequency mixer and employs the laser light like a local oscillator. Measurements taken with acetylene indicate that the instrument will provide useful spectra for work with planetary atmospheres.
