The method of predicting surface brightnesses and colors of external galaxies using stellar population synthesis is developed for arbitrary birthrate histories. A series of computer programs to perform this calculation is described. Synthetic stellar evolution tracks in log(Lbol)-log(T sub e) are converted to the Johnson UBVRI system. The contribution of all stellar masses are integrated using the conventional parameterization for the initial mass function (MF) to obtain the luminosity of an aging stellar population in each passband per unit mass of stars. The influence of the IMF on the UBVR colors is discussed. A parameterized birthrate history model which features a long term exponentially decreasing rate of star formation and includes periodic bursts and continuous star formation events in the most recent history is shown to produce a wide range of colors and magnitudes as observed in spiral galaxies.
