Details of the construction, application, and interpretation of the state detector described by Samson (1973, 1977) are presented. Their simplicity yields benefits in reduced computing costs and increased data volume which can be processed; their sophistication allows the construction of detectors for arbitrarily defined information states of three-dimensional time series. Detection of HD plane polarization is shown as an especially simple case. The movement of a resonant region was followed across a single ground-based magnetic station during a large amplitude Pc5 event. The clarity of the results points towards a more complete use of Pc micropulsations as magnetospheric diagnostics.
