Properties of large-scale collisionless ion-electron plasmas are considered by using a mathematical formalism that allows for a description of phenomena characterized by a nontrivial geometry. Two problems pertaining to the description of large-scale plasmas are discussed which have received much attention in space physics. The first is the proper formulation of the equations governing the plasma motion under various simplifying assumptions; the second is the description of electric current in space plasmas, particularly the analysis of magnetic-field-aligned current. It is shown that two approximations must be adopted in fluid descriptions of collisionless plasmas in order to make the equations governing the plasma motion mathematically tractable and that the large-scale electric current in a quasi-steady plasma, or in a hot plasma flowing along field lines, consists of two distinguishable currents.
