Radial motions in the solar atmosphere have been deduced (Athay, 1976) from apparent wavelength shifts of and in absorption lines. The direction of the motion, however, is uncertain when appropriate references (lines) are not available. It has been shown recently (Doschek et al., 1976; Doschek and Feldman, 1977) that there exists a relative downflow of material from higher atmospheric layers of the sun, since lines originating in the transition region are red-shifted with respect to the underlying absorption line spectrum of the deeper chromospheric layers. In the present study downflow velocities are derived from wavelength-shift measurements (obtained from spectrograms of 0.016-A resolution) of the Mg II core absorption.
