The history of plans for a manned mission to Mars is reviewed. The planned use of the Apollo program as an intermediary to travel to Mars, various contracts to develop a Mars mission, and the Voyager project to land an automated station on the Martian surface are discussed. Political and economic reasons for not undertaking a mission to Mars and the possibility of a future manned mission to Mars are examined.
