We investigate the parameter space for theories of the type which produces bosonic superconducting strings or vortex lines. In particular we show how the tunnelling rate from the current-carrying metastable state constrains parameters in the Higgs potential. Using this we ask whether the positive pressure produced by the current is generically large enough to cancel the string tension entirely, forming ``springs''. Typically we find that superconducting strings with long-lived currents are springs.
