UV and near-UV spectra of CO(+) and N2(+) in the Venus ionosphere were examined with the purpose of determining the signatures of the absolute abundance of these species as well as of their neutral precursors, CO and N2. Analytic expressions for the distribution of CO(+), N2(+), O(+) (2D), and O(+) (2P) were developed, which accurately reproduce the results of a one-dimensional photochemical diffusive model, over the altitude range of interest (120-195 km), of the Pioneer Venus Orbiter ion mass spectrometer data and predict the airglow signature of these minor ions. It is shown that, by incorporating recent laboratory measurements by Mitchell and Hus (1985) of the dissociative recombination rate of CO(+) as well as reactions with metastable O(+) ions reported by Fox (1982), the earlier discrepancy between theory and data can be removed. It is shown that the densities of CO(+), N2(+), and metastable O(+) are sensitive to the model atmosphere chosen.
