Concentrations of Na, Cl, and NO3 in the south polar snow layers during 1957-1983 are studied. The data reveal a weakening of the tropospheric poleward transport during the winter since 1980. The observation of unusual springtime NO3 maxima corresponding to years when the lower stratosphere was very cold supports the stratospheric uptake of HNO3 by polar stratospheric clouds under certain conditions.
