The structure of the magnetic and electric fields in the vicinity of the magnetopause are analyzed theoretically. These fields are shown to be formed as a result of the combined effect of three processes: (1) transport of the IMF frozen into the solar-wind plasma; (2) penetration of the IMF into the magnetosphere; and (3) diffusion of the magnetospheric field into the transition layer. In addition, the Ampere force acting on the plasma in the vicinity of the magnetopause is calculated.
