Investigations of the quasi-steady MHD flow of the solar wind past the earth's magnetosphere are reviewed, with emphasis on the calculation of magnetic and electric fields in the transition layer and at the magnetospheric boundary. The characteristics of the magnetic barrier are analyzed as well as reconnection on the background of the magnetic barrier. It is shown that the inclusion of the Petchek reconnection model in the general scheme for solving the MHD-flow problem makes it possible to obtain calculations of electric and magnetic fields at the magnetospheric boundary which agree with experimental data.
