Cosmic rays carry a unique record of the violent events in which the chemical elements are created. Inferences about their long journeys reveal important information about the structure and distribution of matter and magnetic fields in interstellar space. Further, the study of cosmic-ray interactions with particles in our atmosphere provides nuclear physicists with data at energies far beyond those that will ever be achieved in Earthbound accelerators.
