In order to explore the discrepancy between the currently accepted thermospheric N2(+) model and measured values, the rate constant and branching ratio for the thermospherically important N2(+) + O reaction have been remeasured in a flowing afterglow. A rate constant of 1.8 (+ or - 0.7) x 10 to the -10th cu cm/s and a branching ratio of NO(+):O(+) = 90(+ or - 3):10(+ or - 3) are found, in good agreement with previous measurements. Implications of the findings for atmospheric models are considered.
