The stability of the solar wind with regard to the whistler mode is analyzed for the linear case, and it is found that this mode leads to destabilization at distances of over 100 solar radii. The instability involves a coupling between protons and alpha-particles and may feed energy to alpha-particles so that the particles are accelerated or heated. The dispersion relation is discussed, and the minimum value of the relative velocity between alpha-particles and protons for the excitation of the instability is shown to be the proton thermal velocity. Parameter values for the maximum growth rate at 200 solar radii are reported.
