Data acquisition in High Energy Physics processes data from particle interactions in collider or fixed target experiments. With the commissioning of the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, a new era is about to begin. Collision rates of 40 MHz and data volumes of about 40 TB/s called for the development of new solutions to data acquisition. Today, these systems are starting to operate. While at the time of design, LHC scale data acquisition systems were unique, we start to see similar challenges in other domains such as on-line video processing, proteomics and future astronomical facilities. This paper presents the challenges of data acquisition systems as we find them in high-energy physics experiments at CERN and classify them into technical, operational and organizational domains. We shed light on approaches addressing these problems.
