An iterative inversion technique for processing infrared data is used to characterize the average atmospheric thermal structures of Uranus and Neptune. The ratio of the integrated thermal emission of the atmosphere to the power received from the sun ranges from less than unity to 1.3 for Uranus and from 2.1 to 3.3 for Neptune. While the amount of methane in the upper atmosphere of Uranus seems to be in accord with the saturation law, the amount of methane in the Neptunian atmosphere exceeds the level predicted by the saturation law. There is also a rather sharp temperature inversion above the Neptunian troposphere.
