The impact of magnetic birefringence or magneto-optical effects on the line spectra of magnetic white dwarfs is investigated using model calculations. It is shown that at fields at which the line splitting resembles that of an overlapping Zeeman triplet, the central depth of the p component can be increased by as much as 50 per cent. Changes are also found in polarization near the central component.
