A description is presented of a radiometer making use of a self-absorbing gas cell for rocket-borne measurement of the NO gamma-band airglow. The error due to the incompleteness of the self-absorption is analyzed theoretically, and found to be unimportant in comparison to other experimental errors. The NO density profiles at middle latitudes reported by other experiments are found to be consistent with the present results, when diurnal variations and solar activity dependence are taken into account.
