The authors analyze the errors in photographic photometry of planetary images, arising during densitometry of high-contrast negatives due to the finite size of the elemental photometer area. By scanning images of the full Moon as an example, the authors show that these errors can attain several percent in regions of sharp change in photographic density, e.g., at mare-continent boundaries. They emphasize that these errors do not occur when using CCD arrays to directly record images of this type.
