A basic question is why magnetic fields occur naturally in planets with liquid cores and stars. The kinematic dynamo problem attempts to address this question by asking whether a flow of an electrically conducting, initially unmagnetized fluid is unstable to the exponential amplification of a small seed magnetic field. If it is, then it can be concluded that the magnetic-field-free state is unnatural, and that the flow will create a self-generated field. Recent work has shown that, at large magnetic Reynolds number, the key to understanding this problem is provided by concepts from chaotic dynamics. This talk will review some of this work, discussing such topics as the fractal nature of magnetic fields, the role of finite time Lyapunov exponents, and the singular tendency for flux cancellation.
