The interaction of neutrinos with a plasma can be described by the refractive index of the neutrino field. The weak interaction current, due to the weak neutrino-plasma coupling, can give a significant contribution to the refractive index in conditions occuring in supernovae. We generalize previous work(R.Bingham, J.M.Dawson, J.J.Su, H.A.Bethe, Phys.Lett.A) 193, 279 (1994) on the parametric instabilities arising when the weak interactions between an intense neutrino beam and a dense plasma are taken into account. Using the concept of ponderomotive force of the neutrinos in a plasma, we determine the linear growth rate and threshold for the neutrino beam modulational instability. These results are also extended for the case of a neutron background. In this case, a new type of parametric instability is predicted, formally equivalent to the usual forward Brillouin-type instabilities found in laser-plasma interaction.
