The magnetohydrodynamical instability of self-gravitating magnetized filamentary clouds is investigated by means of a normal mode analysis. The density distribution in equilibrium is assumed to be a function of the radial distance from the axis. The magnetic field is assumed to have both longitudinal and azimuthal components. Dispersion relations are obtained numerically as a function of the strength and configuration of the magnetic field. The equilibrium model is described. The dispersion relation for axisymmetric and kink modes are obtained. The dependences of the dispersion relation on the magnetic field strength and configuration are shown. On the basis of the stability analysis, the application of the theory to observations is discussed.
