The NCAR TIGCM has been used in conjunction with predictions for a lower atmosphere model to simulate the atmospheric tides. The TIGCM tidal simulations are in reasonably good agreement with available observations and predictions from the MSIS and HWM empirical models of neutral temperatures of winds. The phases are produced better than the amplitudes, and the temperatures better than the winds. The worst agreement occurs for the zonal winds for which very few data exist. The models were used to investigate the latitudinal structure of the neutral meridional winds and temperatures near 300 kmm, along with the solar cycle variation. In general, the diurnal component is modeled better than the semidiurnal and the winds are modeled somewhat better than the temperatures. Both MSIS and TIGCM tend to underestimate the observed temperature amplitudes; the disagreement is especially large for the semidiurnal component. Significant discrepancies in the latitudinal structure and solar cycle variation predicted by the models are noted.
