Recently declassified experiments in adaptive optics offer astronomers new tools that will soon revolutionize ground-based astronomy. It will enable astronomers to attain full diffraction-limited performance. The topics covered include the following: laser beacons; the first beacon trails; the discovery of the laser-beacon concept by astronomers; real-time correction; unwanted laser light; beacon requirements; and tilt correction.
