The COBE satellite experiment known as the Differential Microwave Radiometer has revolutionized our outlook on cosmology. It provided the first detection, since confirmed, of large-scale fluctuations in the cosmic microwave background, at a level δT/T ~ 10-5. This talk reviews the impact this discovery has had on our understanding of the origin and evolution of the large-scale structure of the universe. It is presented as an epic saga in two acts.
