The use of a ΔE-E telescope in the backscattering analysis of heavy elements in a light matrix enables to substantially lower the detection limit due to almost complete elimination of the pile-up background produced by the matrix scattering. The method uses the energy dependence of stopping power in order to separate true and pile-up signals of the same amplitude.
