The optical depth of the martian atmosphere determines the
brightness of shadows. We estimate the optical depth from the
brightness of shadows in orbiter images. It is best to use
images taken in colors between yellow and red. Two case studies
suggest an accuracy of ±15% or better between yellow and red.
