A sharp decline in auroral arc luminosity immediately after solar flare onsets is noted in the present examination of the behavior of the polar auroras in the dark area of the auroral oval during solar flares. Auroral arcs broke up into patches, and in most cases disappeared in 2-3 min, while bright, discrete auroras appeared again close to the maximum phase of the solar flares. The median value of polar aurora effects was 8 min. A simple model is suggested for the qualitative explanation of the observed phenomena.
