A new technique is used to determine the secular variation of the
geomagnetic ancient field in Athens. The results indicate that published
Greek archaeomagnitudes were seriously affected by alteration. It is
shown that all intensities obtained using modifications of the Thellier
method may be affected by alteration and are, therefore, suspect.
