The cause of the interstellar 2200 Å feature is still unknown, over 20 years after its discovery. The feature varies independently of the rest of the extinction curve implying that a different physical mechanism is at work. The suggestion is made here that the 2200 Å feature might be caused by charge transfer between neutral hydrogen and singly ionized iron, silicon and magnesium.
