New data on the earth's nightside magnetosphere collected by the ISEE-3 are discussed. The data show that the distant magnetospheric tail contains a thick region of hot plasma which drifts slowly towards the earth with average speeds of 100 km/s. The data provide new evidence strongly supporting the view that magnetic substorms are closely linked with large-scale rearrangements of the configuration of plasmas and fields in the nightside tail.
