The X-ray radiometer experiment on the Vega 1 and 2 descent modules for measuring the Venus cloud aerosol (VCA) is described with emphasis on the measurement technique, the device operation, and the calibration. The main findings are presented in detail, and it is shown that the main chemical elements in the VCA are chlorine, sulfur, phosphorus, and lighter elements. The aerosol element concentration profile was obtained in the 61-47 km height range. With respect to the distribution of chemical elements, three tiers were observed in the Venus clouds. Phase transitions of aerosol settling on the instrument filters were determined, and mass-loading profiles of phosphorus, sulfur, and chlorine in the aerosol were obtained.
