The observational properties of active galaxies are described, weaknesses of theoretical models for the central engine are reviewed, and the contribution of the QUASAT satellite to their study is assessed. The large kinetic power inferred in jets issuing from active galaxies which can exceed that in the photon luminosity, is not readily explained by the simple picture of an accreting black hole. Direct imaging offers an excellent opportunity for finding out the shape of active galactic nuclei: QUASAT can give information on radio structures at the scale where most of the optical and ultraviolet line radiation originates, on the collimation of jets, and on the statistics of active galaxies.
