Ozone production via the binary collision in which O2 plus the excited oxygen molecule O2 yields O3 plus O is considered. The ratio of the contribution to the rate of ozone formation from the binary collision process to that from the classical ozone source is calculated for altitudes between 95 and 105 km, and in no case is the ratio found to be large enough to account for the apparent discrepancy previously suggested in model ozone above 95 km. It is concluded that the present reaction can make only a minor contribution in the quiescent atmosphere.
