Spacecraft and ground based observations of Halley's comet in the near IR have revealed an emission band around 3.4 μm. Laboratory samples of hydrogenated amorphous carbon grains (HAC) (diameter ≅ 80 Å) have shown a similar feature at 3.4 μm. In this paper the authors discuss the possibility that the band can be attributed to small HAC particles.
