Simulation experiments of cometary nuclei are planned in a satellite test facility (space simulator). This cylindrical chamber (3.5 m diameter and 4.8 m length) is equipped with a liquid nitrogen cooled inner surface and a solar radiation simulator up to 1.2 solar constants. Preparatory experiments are performed in small vacuum chambers. Sample production is by evaporation of a water-mineral suspension onto a cold plate or injection of the suspension into liquid nitrogen. Areas to be studied are: formation of regions with different activity such as crusts, release mechanisms of dust particles, and temperature profile and variations as a function of solar radiation intensity. The program is directed to test cometary models, to assist future cometary missions and to provide knowledge of sample handling at low temperatures.
