The Halley Multicolour Camera (HMC) on board the European spacecraft, Giotto, returned high resolution images of the nuclear and near-nuclear regions of comet P/Halley in March 1986. The images transmitted in the seconds prior to closest approach allow a detailed study of an active region down to a resolution of ≡50 m per pixel. Variations in activity within the main emission have been observed and results are presented which indicate deviations from a r-1 law to a less steep profile near the source region. The results obtained provide new constraints on models of cometary jet activity.
